While driving down the central coast of California, we stopped at this beach with enormous waves, it was really cool to see and made for some good photo ops. The colour in the photo is real, the water is really turquoise for some reason, even with grey skies.
You wanted me to write you a critique for this one. As I tell everyone: don't mind the ratings.
Photographically: I can see what your are trying to achieve here and to some extent you've succeded. Trying to capture waves like this indicated that you need to be patient to get the right wave that'll show the brutality/drama of it. It's important here that you get your focus 100% . From what I can see you aren't quite there. This underlines the fact that this needs several attempts. I think your settings are ok, fast shutter compensated with a higher than optimal ISO. It's just the way it has to be.
Post-Processing: To give this some more drama and brutality I would suggest that you increase the overall contrast, saturation and clarity. Also adding an overall sharpness would help. And this capture would also benefint from a slight vignette as the foreground is bright and interesting part of the image is the wave in the background.
Summary: In general you want to give some sort of impression when taking photos like this. Adding an element that the waves crash into would strengthen this. Sometimes it works well with nothing but the direct action, but picture this: how often does it work capturing a clenched fist striking thin air? the effect of the punch would increase alot if the fist would hit something. I'm not saying that every capture needs a action and recipent, but without a recipent it requires so much more from the action itself. Agree?
